The Impact Of Colonisation On The Americas Flashcards
The growth of the slave trade:
Slaves were brought from West Africa to the Americas
They worked long hours on plantations picking cotton and sugar
They made lots of profits for the European countries
10 - 15 million slaves were shipped from 1600s to 1800s
Destruction of culture:
The people from Spain came to South America with their culture
They forced it upon them and forced them to adopt new traditions
If they didn’t obey they’d get beaten, killed and/ or starved
Native languages were lost and Spanish and Portuguese was forced upon them
The Spread of Christianity:
Along with imposing their culture, they also imposed their religion
Similar repercussions would follow if they didn’t obey
The native population decimated:
As a result of slaves and natives being killed and birth rates being low, the population slowly decreased
Diseases in which Africans didn’t develop immunity to also helped
The slavery triangle:
Ships sailed to African slaving ports and took slaves to the Americas. Those ships then sailed back to Europe, full of food and precious materials
