What was he inspired by?
The tales of riches in the Aztec area that set sail to modern day Mexico
The natives alliance with Cortés:
The natives didn’t like the Aztecs violent rule so they made an alliance with the Spaniards.
The lead up to the battle:
Cortés’ men marches into Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico city) to meet their king, Montezuma. They capture the king and try to lead through him.
What happened at and after the battle?
The angry Aztecs attacked Cortés’ men and drove them out of the city. However they came back with 10,000 men and led a 3 month seige. Cortés then became the governor of the remains of Tenochtitlan, New Spain.

495 cities by 1519
Over 250,000 people in Tenochtitlan, an island in middle of lake
Kings and priests were at the top
They had no iron or steel, just copper, wood and stone
No cattle, horses, sheep, pigs or goats before the Europeans
Ate turkey, dog and guinea pigs
Inca beliefs:
Most important god was Huitzilopochtli (sun god). They beloved if he grew weak the sun wouldn’t rise and the universe would end so he needed nourishment by human blood sacrifice.
They had another god called Quatzalcoatl that they believed would return one day from over seas.

When and with who did Cortés arrive with?
In February 1519, he ,Andes with 11 ships, 500 soldiers and 13 horses. He burned the ships to show the men there was no going back.
Who was Malinche?
She was a slave girl given to Hernan and spoke several local languages. She quickly learned Spanish and Nuba came his translator. She also bore him a son.
