The Hydrogen Economy - CR Flashcards
1
Q
Why is hydrogen fuel a sustainable option compared to fossil fuels?
A
There is a lot of hydrogen in the atmosphere and can be separated by using heat and provides an alternative to oil and can be reused
2
Q
What are the advantages?
A
- best uses are as fuel for heating or transport where’s it’s used in a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity which are more efficient so a little hydrogen can go a long way
- cheap to produce
- it’s safe and already used in chemicals and other industries
3
Q
What are the disadvantages?
A
- hydrogen isn’t a pure element, energy has to be used to convert water, biomass and other natural gases into hydrogen
- hydrogen is co2 free but the energy used to separate it isn’t
- hydrogen fuel cell car averages emissions of 80g of co2/ km
4
Q
How is California expanding its hydrogen car network?
A
I’m 2005, to encourage consumers to buy these cars they developed the worlds first hydrogen highway with 36 filling stations in the state
