Consuming Reaources Flashcards
what are the different types of resources?
Energy
Mineral
Physical
Biological
what are the uses, examples and the categories for energy?
U: heating, cooking, transport
E: oil, coal, water, sunlight
C: non and renewable
what are the uses, examples and the categories for Mineral?
U: buildings, jewellery making
E: iron ore, diamond
C: non renewable
what are the uses, examples and the categories for physical?
U: energy
E: water, wind and sunlight
C: renewable
what are the uses, examples and the categories for biological?
U: food production, manafacture
E: biofuels, wheat, fish
C: sustainable
what are the benefits to the use of tar and oil?
- profitable for major oil companies
- reduced dependence on the middle east for oil
what are the costs to the use of tar and oil?
- produce three times more co2 than lighter oils
- needs 6 barrels of water to extract one barrel of oil
- 300 billion barrels is only 5 years of supply
what are the benefits to the use of biofuel?
- co2 is absorbed when they grow, but it is released when used
- every country could grow its own biofuel
what are the benefits to the use of solar?
- solar energy is unlimited
- environmentally friendly
what are the costs to the use of biofuel?
- not carbon neutral because the farming of them uses co2
- to meet current demand all the food crop regions of Europe and USA would need to convert to biofuel production
what are the costs to the use of solar?
- can be intermittent so needs a back up system
- current production is tiny
- relatively expensive and only lasts 20 years
why are so many people hungry?
- poverty: can’t afford it
- pop increase: increase in demand, less resources
- climate change: increase extreme weather events e.g. droughts
food security
this exists where people do not hungry or live in fear or starvation
they can either produce enough to meet all their needs or it is imported
food insecurity
this exists where people do not have access to adequate food supplies
this can lead to serious problems like famine and starvation and occurs in countries with seasonal or annual food production
future food supply will be effected by…
- food use for biofuels
- rising oil prices
- climate change
- changing diet
- rising pop
