- people are becoming weaker and therefore unable to work -> income falls
- high costs of medicine which families cannot afford
- 1/3 people get treatment
- death of a wage earner + cost of funeral pushes families into further poverty
- by 2009, 500,000 orphans due to parents lost by AIDS

- poverty increased in these areas due to low agriculture product activity
- brain drain of educated
- huge corruption means donors stop donating
- average student stays at school 4 years
