What is the Holy?

A

Holy is associated with religion and prayer and with the things of God. Some thing or place or person is made holy by being blessed or touched in some way by the presence of God.

Who is Rudolf Otto and why is he important?

A

Rudolf Otto was a German historian of religion. Said that we have “domesticated” God. We have made God ordinary and we have taken the mystery out of the Divine. God is no longer otherworldly and transcendent.The idea of holy is a contradiction to this domestication.

A

What is an example of both?

A

For religious people, the sacred refers to things of God, God’s actions and revelation. The profane takes in all that is not sacred. Marriage used to be something that was only holy, however as the world has become more secular it is know both.

A

She is a sociologist who believes that “the essence of religion is the creation of community”. Therefore, anything that provides a focus of community loyalty can be considered sacred. AGAA club could come under this definition.
