The Hip (muscles) Flashcards
What is the origin and insertion point of the piriformis?
Origin is the sacrum of spine and insertion is greater trochanter of proximal femur
What are the actions of the piriformis?
Lateral rotation, abduction of hip
What is the origin and insertion of the obturator internus?
Origin is pelvis and inserts into greater trochanter
What are the actions of the obturator internus?
Lateral rotation and abduction of hip
What muscles contribute to lateral rotation of the hip?
Piriformis, obturator internus, gemellus inferior/superior and quadratus femoris
What are the actions of the gluteus minimus and medius/
Hip adduction (stabilises hip when walking), medially rotates thigh
Where does the gluteus maximus insert?
Iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of proximal femur
What are the actions of the gluteus maximus?
Powerful hip flexor also contributes to lateral rotation and abduction
What are the muscles of the gluteal region?
Gluteus maximus/medius/minimus, obturator internus, piriformis, quadratus femoris, gemellus inferior/superior and tensor fasciae latae
What are the muscles that make up the posterior compartment of the thigh?
Biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus
Which nerve innervates all the muscles of posterior thigh compartment?
Sciatic nerve
What actions do muscles of the posterior thigh compartment do?
Knee flexion and hip extension
