THE HIP JOINT Flashcards
What are the articulations of the Hip joint?
Femoral Head and Acetabulum
What Bones form the ACETABULUM?
Ischium
Ilium
Pubis
The ACETABULUM
What is the ACETABULUM LABRUM?
Rim of Fibrocartilage around the Acetabulum
What is the Role of the Acetabulum Labrum?
Increases the contact between the Pelvis and Femoral Head
What is the TRANSVERSE ACETABULAR LIGAMENT (TAL)?
The TAL is a ligament which bridges the Acetabelar Notch forming the Acetabular Foramen
TAL
What are the passes through the Acetabular Foramen?
Nutrient Blood vessels
Nerves
Define the CAPSULE of the Hip Joint?
Anterior superiorly- Attaches to the Outer Margin of the Labrum
Surrounds the Neck and is attached to the Intertrochanteric Line
Posteriorly- Attaches to the Neck
What is special about the Fibers of the Hip Joint Capsule?
The capsule consist of 2 different fibres:
- Circular “Zona Obicularis” (Provides Stability to the Capsule)
- Longitudinal
The Hip Joint Capsule
What is the INTRACAPSULAR LIGAMENT of the the Hip and What are its contents?
The LIGAMENT OF THE HEAD OF THE FEMUR
(LIGAMENTUM TERES)
The Ligament contains the Artery of the Head of the Femur
LIGAMENTUM TERES
What are the EXTRCAPSULAR LIGAMENTS of the Hip Joint?
1) ILIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
2) ISCHIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
3) PUBOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
What are the Attachments of the ILIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT?
What shape does the Ligament Form?
The ILIOFEMORAL Ligament attaches from the Anterior inferior Iliac Spine and inserts into the Intertrochanteric line
The ILIOFEMORAL Ligament forms a “Y Shape”
What is the role of the ILIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT?
Prevents HYPEREXTENSION of the Hip
The ILIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
What is the STRONGEST Ligament in the body?
The ILIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
What happens to the Tension in the ILIOFEMORAL Ligament on Extension?
The Tension increases
What are the Attachments of the PUBOFEMORAL LIGAMENT?
Arises from the Superior pubic rami and attaches onto the Intertrochanteric line
What is the FUNCTION of the PUBOFEMORAL Ligament?
Prevents Extension and Abduction of the hip
PUBOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
What are the attachments of the ISCHIOFEMORAL Ligament?
Located POSTERIORLY
Arises from the Ischium and attaches onto the Greater Trochanter
What is the FUNCTION of the ISCHIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT?
Prevents Hyperextension for the Hip Joint
THE ISCHIOFEMORAL LIGAMENT
Where does the main blood supply to the Hip come from?
PROFUNDA FEMORIS ARTERY
What are the main branches of the PROFUNDA FEMORIS ARTERY, which supply the Hip Joint?
Medial Circumflex Artery
Lateral Circumflex Artery
Where does the Profunda Femoris Artery Come from?
THE COMMON FEMORAL ARTERY
Where does the Artery to the Head of the Femur come from?
Branch of the OBTURATOR ARTERY
Where does the OBTURATOR ARTERY come from?
Branch of the INTERNAL ILIAC ARTERY
What other arteries supply the Hip Joint?
Branches from the INFERIOR AND SUPERIOR RECTAL ARTERIES
Which artery provides the Majority of the blood supply to the hip joint?
MEDIAL CIRCUMFLEX ARTERY
BLOOD SUPPLY- HIP JOINT
