Lower Limb Vessels- THE VEINS Flashcards
How are the Veins of the LOWER LIMB CLASSIFIED?
- DEEP VEINS
- SUPERFICIAL VEINS
What are the TWO SUPERFICIAL VEINS of the lower limb?
LONG SAPHENOUS VEIN
SHORT SAPHENOUS VEIN
Describe the COURSE of the SHORT SAPHENOUS VEIN?
- Starts in the LATERAL part of the FOOT
- Formed from the DORSAL VENOUS ARCH OF THE FOOT
- Passes Posterior to the LATERAL MALLEOLUS
- Passes between the 2 heads of Gastrocnemius
- Enters the POPLITEAL FOSSA
- Drains into the POPLITEAL VEIN
What NERVE accompanies the SHORT SAPHENOUS VEIN?
SURAL NERVE
Is there any CONNECTION between the SHORT and LONG SAPHENOUS VEINS?
Yes
Veins connect the two veins allowing the SHORT SAPHENOUS vein to DRAIN into the LONG SAPHENOUS VEIN
SHORT SAPHENOUS VEIN
Describe the COURSE of the LONG SAPHENOUS VEIN
- Starts over the MEDIAL aspect of the foot
- Passes in front of the MEDIAL MALLEOLUS
- Travels MEDIALLY over the Medial Tibial and Femoral Condyles of the knee
- Enters the FEMORAL TRIANGLE
- DRAINS into the FEMORAL VEIN
What Vein does the GREAT SAPHENOUS VEIN DRAIN into?
FEMORAL VEIN in the GROIN
What are the MAIN TRIBUTARIES of the GREAT SAPHENOUS VEIN in the GROIN?
- SUPERFICIAL EPIGASTRIC VEIN
- SUPERFICIAL CIRCUMFLEX ILIAC VEIN
- SUPERFICIAL EXTERNAL PUDENDAL VEIN
What connects the Deep Veins to the Superficial Veins?
PERFORATING VEINS
What vein does the SUPERFICIAL EPIGASTRIC VEIN communicate with?
THORACO-EPIGASTRIC VEIN
TRIBUTARY OF THE AXILLARY VEIN
