The Heart, blood and vessels. Flashcards
Name the chambers…
Right Atrium, Left Atrium
Right Ventricle, Left Ventricle
What does the vena cava transport?
The vena cava transports deoxygenated blood into the right atrium.
What does the aorta transport?
The aorta transports oxygenated blood around the body.
What does the pulmonary vein do?
The pulmonary vein transports oxygenated blood from the lungs into the heart.
What does the pulmonary artery do?
The pulmonary artery transports deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
What is the hearts function?
To put blood under pressure and pump blood around the body.
What is an artery?
An artery transports blood from the heart around the body ( oxygenated blood) . They carry blood under pressure. They have a small lumen and thick muscular walls.
What is a capillary?
A capillary has a one cell thick wall, to allow for quick diffusion. Arteries branch into capillaries. Capillaries carry blood really close to cells to exchange substances.
What is a vein?
A vein has a large lumen and carries blood to the heart. Blood flows through veins at a low pressure, veins contain valves to stop back flow of blood.
What is blood?
Blood is a tissue.
Blood contains…
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Plasma
Platelets
Red blood cells…
Carry oxygen around the body and contain haemglobin.
White blood cells…
Fight against diseases and infections, they change shape to engulf pathogens.
Platelets…
Help blood clot, they are small fragments of cells.
Plasma…
Is a yellow liquid that carries everything in your blood.
