Diffusion and Active Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the NET MOVEMENT of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane, from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration.
What is a concentration gradient?
The difference between the concentration of the areas in which diffusion is taking place.
What effects the diffusion rate?
The larger the concentration gradient, the faster the diffusion rate.
The higher the temperature, the faster the diffusion rate.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of substances from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration (against a concentration gradient).
What does active transport require?
Active transport requires energy, from respiration. So, the cells need lots of mitochondria to release energy during aerobic respiration.
Where does active transport take place?
Root hairs to absorb mineral ions.
Gut and kidney tubules to absorb glucose.
