Cell differentiation Flashcards
What is differentiation?
Differentiation is the process by which a cell changes to become specialised for a specific function/ purpose.
What happens during cell differentiation?
A cell will develop different sub cellular structures.
Can all animal cells differentiate?
In most animal cells the ability to differentiate is lost at an early stage, after the cells have specialised. Cells that do differentiate e.g. bone marrow cells are mainly used for replacing/ repairing skin and blood cells.
What is an undifferentiated cell called?
A stem cell.
How is the nerve cell specialised for its function?
The nerve cell has long branched connections to transport electrical impulses around the body. Also, the myelin sheath insulates and speeds it up.
