the heart Flashcards
what is the heart
it is a muscular organs that pumps blood through blood vessels to all parts of the body
where is the heart found
in the middle of the thorax
between the lungs
what doe you call the bottom section of the heart
the apex
its is slightly pointed
what is a Pericardium
its is a double membrane that surround the heart
the heart is made of muscle tissue called what
cardiac muscle
what doe you call the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients
coronary blood vessels
the heart is a double pump
is is divided into the right side as the left side by what ?
by a septum
what is the function of the septum
to prevent blood from mixing
where does the right side of the heart receive and pump blood too and where does the left side of the heart receive and pump blood too
right side - receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps this blood to the lungs
left side - receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps this blood to the body
name the 4 chambers of the heart
- right atrium
- right ventricle
- left atrium
- left ventricle
explains what happens in the right atrium and right ventricle
deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium from the body through a tube called VENA CAVA
it then moves into the right ventricle where it is pumped to lungs through a tube called PULMONARY ARTERY
explains what happens in the left atrium and left ventricle
lungs covert deoxygenated blood into oxygenated blood
oxygenated blood is carried from lungs back to heart through the PULMONARY VEIN
oxygenated blood from the lungs enters the left atrium and then moves to the left ventricle where it is piped at Hugh pressure to the whole of the body through the AORTA
