respiratory system Flashcards
what is the respiratory system
it is responsible for supplying oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide from the body
what is the word equation for respiration
glucose+oxygen—carbon D+ water+energy
where does respiration take place
in the cells
list the main components for the respiratory system
nose mouth trachea and other air passages lungs blood
what is the trachea
the tube through which the air travels to the lungs
what do you call bronchi which branch into smaller tubes
bronchioles
where does the air eventually end up
in tiny hollow cavities called alveoli
what important processes take place in the alveoli
gaseous exchange
what is each alveoli surrounded by
blood capillaries
describe what the walls of eh capillaries and alveoli consist of
a single layer of cells
explain the process of gaseous exchange
- PULMONARY ARTERY brings DEOXYGENATED BLOOD from the HEART to the lung
- this eventually gets to the capillaries surrounding the alveoli
-CARBON . D diffuses from blood into alveoli
OXYGEN diffuses from alveoli through walls into the capillaries
- concentration of CARBON D in blood DECREASES and the concentration of OXYGEN in blood INCREASES
- capillaries move away from alveoli and combine to form veins
- PULMONARY VEIN carries OXYGENATED BLOOD to the heart from lungs
what is diffusion
the movement of molecules from an area of a high concentration to an area of low concentration down a diffusion gradient
