THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Flashcards
What is the digestive
it is responsible for the breakdown of food into smaller soluble molecules which can be absorbed in the cell
there are two types of digestion, mechanical and chemical
a) when animals eat starch what it is broken down into
b) what is this needed for
a) starch is broken down into glucose
b) this is needed for the process of respiration
a) what are proteins broken down into
b) what is this needed for
a) they are broken down into amino acids
b) needed for growth of the organism
where does digestion start and where does it go after this
digestion starts in the mouth and and the food particles move along the alimentary canal where different processes occur
what is mechanical digestion
the breakdown of food by physical means such as chewing or churning. Teeth cut and grind the food into smaller particles
what is chemical digestion
the breakdown of food by the action of chemicals called enzymes
enzymes are a biological catalyst. a biological catalyst is a substance that speeds up the rate of a reaction
what does the word secrete mean
to release useful substances
what is a bolus
it is a ball of food that is formed after chewing
what is ingestion
the intake of food by chewing and swallowing
name the 4 main processes in the digestive system
1) ingestion
2) digestion
3) absorption
4) egestion
what is egestion
it is when undigested material called faeces are passed out of the body through the anus
