The Heart Flashcards
1
Q
How does the heart begin to function?
A
- Blood enters the right atrium, in which at this point it is dark red with little oxygen
- Mainly waste products
2
Q
Describe the function of the right atrium next
A
- It pumps the blood in to the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve
3
Q
Describe what happens next after the blood has been pumped into the right ventricle
A
- The right ventricle then pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where the oxygen is picked up and the carbon dioxide is deposited
4
Q
Describe the colour change that takes place and why
A
- When the carbon dioxide is deposited, the blood changes colour to bright red because of the oxygen it has collected
5
Q
What takes place from the lungs?
A
- The blood returns to the left atrium
- This happens through the pulmonary vein
6
Q
Describe the last process that takes place
A
- The left atrium pumps blood into the left ventricle and the blood then leaves here through the aorta, to be distributed to the rest of the body
