The Hardy Weinberg Principle Flashcards
A collection of different alleles and genes within an interbreeding population.
Gene Pool
A change in a populations gene pool over several generations.
Microevolution
In a large population in which only random chance is at work, allele frequencies will remain constant from generation to generation.
The Hardy Weinberg Principle Definition
A test including a set of conditions that can determine if evolution is occurring in a population.
The Hardy Weinberg Principle
1) No natural selection
2) No mutations
3) No migration occurs
4) Random mating only
5) Population size must be very large
The Hardy Weinberg Principle Conditions
- Not all evolutionary changes are the result of natural selection
- Change in genetic makeup of a population that are not influenced by individual traits
- These changes tend to decrease genetic diversity
- Random process
Genetic Drift
When a population crashes due to a disaster and the few remaining individuals can only breed with each other.
Population Bottleneck
A small population of individuals separate from their original population and establish a new population.
Founder Effect
RESULT: Particular allele becomes either very common or disappears over generations. Lost alleles lower genetic diversity.
Result of Genetic Drift
RESULT: Rarer alleles are likely to be eliminated in this effect. If the population is allowed to recover, the genetic makeup of the future generations will be limited to surviving alleles.
Result of Population Bottleneck
RESULT: An allele that was common in the large population might become uncommon in founding population, a rare allele from old population may become more common in new population.
