The Greenhouse Effect Flashcards
What is Greenhouse Gas Effect?
When certain gasses in atmosphere affect the aount of heat that is re-radiated from Earth’s surface back into space.
Which gasses contribute to greenhouse gas effect generally?
CO2(g), CH4(g), oxides of nitrogen and CFCs
Describe how greenhouse effect is increasing in our world
- CO2 sinks are reducing (less forests and phytoplankton)
- Grennhouses gasses released in atmosphere are increasing
What reduced the amount of greenhouse gasses in atmosphere?
CO2 sinks - such as phytoplankton and forests
Why are do some greenhouse gasses contribute more to this effect than others?
Some greenhouse gasses are better at trapping heat.
This is called Global Warming Potential
Eg: N2O is equivalent to 298 molecules of CO2
Is water also considered a greenhouse gas?
For VCAA purposes, yes.
