Structure of Atom - Electron Configuration Flashcards
What is ground state?
When electrons have filled lowest possible energy levels
What is excited state?
When energy has been supplied to atom so not all electrons are in lowest possible energy level
What is filling order?
The order in which electrons fill subshells of atom from lowest energy to highest energy
What is a subshell configuration
When all of an atom’s electrons have been written in numerical order to show which subshells they have occupied
What is numerical order?
When subshell configuration is written with shells in numerical order (lowest to highest)
How do you name a subshell?
Shell number followed by subshell followed by superscript that details number of electrons occupying subshell
Eg: 2p^5 (2nd shell, p subshell, 5 electrons)
State ground state electron configuration of Magnesium
1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2
State electron subshell configuration of Magnesium in excited state
1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s1,3p1
Any electron(s) with a shell higher
Which two elements do not follow normal electron configuration?
Copper and Cromium
State electron configuration of Copper And Cromium
- Cu: 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3d10, 4s1
- Cr: 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3d5, 4s1
When cations are formed, which electrons are removed from which shell?
Especially for transition metals
Removed from outer most shell
Not subshell, filling order doesn’t matter, consider valence electrons
When forming ions what are atoms trying to achieve?
A stable state with stable electron sonfiguration and full outer (valence) shell
