Structure of Atom - Introduction Flashcards
Atoms are mostly made of what?
Empty space
What are the three substances found within an atom and state their charge
- Proton - Positive charge
- Electron - Negative charge
- Neutron - Neutral charge
What is the relative size of protons, neutrons and electrons?
Protons and neutrons are relatively the same size.
Electrons are about 1/800th the size
What determines what element an atom is?
The number of protons in atom
An atom with an overall charge is called a what?
Ion
An atom with more protons than electrons is called a what?
Cation (positive charge)
An atom with more electrons than protons is called what?
Anion (negative charge)
What is mass number?
The mass of the atom
How is mass number calculated?
No. protons + No. neutrons
What are isotopes?
Atoms that are same element (same number of protons) that have a different mass number (different amount of neutrons)
Where are protons and neutrons found within an atom?
In nucleus
Where are electrons found in an atom?
Electrons shells
How is the Nuclear Symbol formatted
- Element Symbol written in big
- Mass number as superscript (on left)
- Atomic number as subscript (on left)
What is an element?
Substances comprised of only one type of atom (all atoms have same number of protons)
What is a molecule
Two or more non-metal and/or hydrogen atoms. (May be same atom)
