What were the main push factors to North?
Bad conditions, debt, lacking disposable income, hard to find work, needed an additional business to get by, dull, small scale, violence, reliant on crop season

$500-1000
What were the pull factors North?
Ambition, more money, encouragement from friends, opportunities, easier to travel there, the war gave jobs for manufacturing (munitions), the need for soldiers/labour
What was the impact of the war? (1917-18)
Economic opportunities, AA’s gained promotion to officer roles, many AA’s who went to France saw no segregation, over 300,000 AA served in WW1 segregated units. Overall their horizons were broadened
What was the reality in North?
Civil Rights were limited, segregation occurred unofficially, in 1919 white soldiers came home to jobs taken away, work discrimination
The positives of the North..
Lynching was publicly condemned, blacks with voting rights could to juror, racism was not as obvious, segregation encouraged black culture such as Jazz, and there was development in education/business (middle class)
What did poor, unskilled workers mainly focus on?
Survival rather than Civil Rights
Were black Northern newspapers spread South?
No, they were kept from the South
How did the North approach lynching?
Tried to make it a crime (anti-lynching laws)
