Mao believed sparrows, flies, rats, mosquitoes eating crops was the reason for low agricultural output and so mass killing them would solve this

The killing disrupted the food chain and catepillar populations grew which ate the crops even more

The consquences of the great leap forward
Mao took a passive role from 1962-67 with his policies being open critised. Between 1958-62 betweeen 15 million and 55 million people died.
