Edwards Political maneuvering
Edward out-maneuvered the Scots both politically and legally - critically he compelled the competitors to swear loyalty to him BEFORE he made his final judgement.
Important because it allowed him to demand that the Scots recognise him as their overlord, and therefore legal superior.

Edward became increasingly assertive, revealing his true ambitions of overlordship.
Important because the Guardians swore an oath recognising his authority and by forcing Balliol to accept Edward as his overlord, it enables Edward to appoint a King of Scotland he knows he can control and exerts his authority over from the very beginning of John’s reign.

Edward declares he will “reduce the king and the kingdom of Scotland to his rule” as he had Wales.
Important as increases pressure on Scots -Edward appears to be preparing for war.

Edward asserts his authority by refusing to cross the border into Scotland - Scots cross river Tweed AFTER they’re assured it was not a ‘submissive’ act.

Edward demands all Competitors accept his overlordship BEFORE the legal process - all do including Bruce & Balliol.
Important as guarantees he will control the next Scottish king.
Legal Process
Court comprised 40 auditors appointed by Balliol, 40 by Bruce, 24 by Edward - court adjourned.
Importantly during this lengthy adjournment of 10 months Edward acts as a direct lord of Scotland, receiving oaths of fealty from Scottish lords.
