- have headquarters of many transnational corporations
- are centres of world finance
- provide international consumer services
- are learning centres - network or Unis ,policy makers , and company research bases
3 ways world cities can be characterised
- Lost a lot of their routine ,low value jobs to other cities or countries
- high level of synergy in economic structures - companies beef it from working close together
- offer wide range of jobs but workforce can be polarised
