Fostered critical thought, encouraging public to question absolute monarchy. Growing dissatisfaction of ancien regime especially in 1750’s and 1760’s.

Heavy taxation imposed upon the third estate, combined with inflation and widespread famine.

King Loui’s inability to address the inequality at hand.

He was the voice of the people and his efforts to reform the financial system was highly favored by the common people

August 4, 1789. Abolished feudal privileges and tax exemptions for the nobility. Passed by the National Assembly.
