Carthage initially dominated due to its naval superiority.

the Battle of Mylae= Romes first naval victory led by Gaius Duilius. the corvus allowed soilders to board enemy ships

battle of the Aegates= forced Carthage to sue for peace

result=
rome learned resilience and adapted to sea battle/ building a navy

collspse of carthage empire and roman navel superiority

annexation= sicily becomes romes first overseas province

  • annex of Sardinia and Corsica as carthage was weak
  • the Illyrian wars against Queen Teuta and Demetrius were to eliminate piracy in the Adriatic sea (Rome as protectors).
  • Battle of Telamon secured N Italy

  • means friend of rome
  • not equals but about hierarchy
  • allowed for another way to expand then just war
    ex- Illyrian War: deafeted Teuta, greek city states gain Roman protection but are loyal to Rome and its interests
