How did the Roman army evolve during the Early Republic (up to 264 BCE)?
army was based on the legion system= each having 60 centuries of hoplite soldiers
soilders were mostly farmers who had informal training
phalanx of hoplites= pushing maches
armies led by those with imperium so consuls. wealth= power. how much could that person contribute to the war?
sociis provided additonal troops
How did the Roman army evolve during the Middle Republic (up to 133 BCE)?
number of legions increased in size
60 centuries + Auxilia “the help” which was soilders or military equipment from allied states
solution to the one year term of consuls is Prorogation:
consuls comman extended= proconsul
praetors command extended= propraetor
all this allowed for stability during wars
created types of soilders= first line, 2nd, 3rd
Maniples= smaller units, allowing for greater flexibility during war. these units would create a Quincunx formation (checkerboard arrangement)
