Who appealed to Christians to go on a Crusade?
Pope Urban II appealed to Christians from all over Europe to drive back Muslim forces to reclaim the Holy Lan of Jerusalem.
Did the appeal work?
Yes the response was overwhelming tens of thousands of men, women , peasant and professional soldiers flocked towards Constantinople.
What was the first encounter with the Muslim forces like?
In the so called Peasants Crusade about twelve thousand peasants led by Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless reached Seljuk territory first and were brutally killed.
What were some of the reasons that people went on a Crusade?
Some reasons for people to go on a crusade is that if they fought and claimed Jerusalem they would go to heaven, if they fought all there sins would be forgiven and for some it was a chance to get rich.
What city did they claim that was very important?
They clamed the important town of Nicaea which with the help of the Byzantine Armies and Antioch fell and European forces had there sites on Jerusalem.
Did they reclaim Jerusalem?
Yes they did in on the fifteenth of July ten ninety nine.
