Williams army included his foot soldiers who were positioned in the middle of his army, his archers at the front and his Calvary at the rear his well trained soldiers made up the majority of his army he also had one thousand five-hundred archers at his disposal and he had two-thousand knights on horseback who were very professional.

What did Harold’s Army include?

A

Harold only had infantry and most of his army was made up of peasants and there weapons only included farming tools but Harold’s army included the Housecarls who were Harold’s bodyguards there were two thousand five-hundred of them and they had enormous battle-axes these men were on the front line and the peasants behind and Harold himself was at the rear with his standards.

A Norman man broke the ranks and his head was chopped clean off by the Housecarls and the Normans fired there arrows killing many peasants but the Housecarls blocked them with there shields.

A

The Saxons started to attack down the hill and threw spears and made the shield wall then rumour broke out that William was dead and he had to ride along the Norman front line to prove he was not the Norman cavalry went to the aid of the Bretons and killed the pursuing Saxon troops.

A

There was a pause in battle and Harold’s troops were in good shape and as for William the hill was to steep for his horse’s and he needed the Saxons to come and fight on his ground.

A

William had a plan called the feigned retreat as he wanted to trick the Saxons into thinking that they were running away and draw them into running down the hill and it worked the Housecarls and peasants broke rank and chased the Normans.

A

The Norman archers picked up there used arrows and used them again and because the shield wasn’t up it caused more casualties and it was thought that despite Harold being surrounded by his bodyguards got hit and died news spread quickly amongst the Saxon army.

What happened after Harold’s death?

A

William ordered his foot soldiers forward and many of the Saxons fled into nearby forests but the Housecarls fought to the end but were killed to the last man a Norman knight then rode up to Harold’s body and drove a sword into his heart William then took Harold’s banner and the Normans won.
