The eye Flashcards
Pupil
A hole in the centre of the iris that lets light into the inner eye.
Lens
A clear flexible structure that makes an image on the eye’s retina.
Cornea
A tough, clear covering that helps protect the eye. It also bends light and if the first step to making an image on the retina.
Iris
A muscle that controls how much light enters the eye.
Blind spot
The place where the optic nerve leaves the retina and the area has no light sensitive cells.
Optic nerve
The bundle of nerve fibres that carry information from the retina to the brain.
Retina
The layer of light sensitive cells at the back of the eye, which detects images focused by the cornea and the lens.
Ciliary muscle
Is a muscle that relaxes r tightens in order for the lens to change shape for focusing.
Aqueous humour
Plays an essential roll in the health of the eye, and nourishes the cornea and lens.
Vitreous humour
Gel like substance which lies between the lens and retina. it helps keep the shape of the eye and hold the retina in place.
Blood vessels
Supply nutrient rich blood to structures of the eye. They then return used blood and waste to the heart.
Fovea
Is responsible for sharp central vision need for activities where visual detail is important, for example reading and driving.
