The Eye Flashcards
Posterior five sixths of middle or vascular tunic loosely joined to sclera
Choroid coat
White part of outer tunic
Sclera
Transparent anterior portion of outer tunic
Cornea
Inner lining of eyelid
Conjunctiva
Secretes tears
Lacrimal gland
Empties into nasal cavity
Nasolacrimal duct
Fills posterior cavity of eye
Vitreous humor
Area where optic nerve originates
Optic disk
Smooth muscle that controls light intensity
Iris
Fills anterior and posterior chambers of the anterior cavity of the eye
Aqueous humor
Contains visual receptors called rods and cones
Retina
Connects lens to ciliary body
Suspensory ligament
Causes lens to change shape
Ciliary muscle
Antibacterial agent in tears
Lysozyme
Pupil
Opening that allows light into the interior of the eye
Iris
Controls the diameters of the pupil and how much light enters the eye
Sclera
The sclera provides support and protection
Ocular muscles
Rotate and aim the eye for directed vision
Optic nerve
Conducts impulses from the retina to the brain
Anterior chamber
Space between cornea and the iris. Contains a clear, watery fluid called aqueous humor.
Inner chamber
Space between lens and retina. Filled with vitreous humor.
Lens
Bends light rays to focus them on the retina. Is able to change shape.
Ciliary muscle
Control and alter the shape of the lens . Connected to the lens by suspensory ligaments. Secrets aqueous humor.
Vitreous humor
Colorless and transparent jelly like material that is under pressure to maintain the shape of the eyes interior.
Choroid layer
Middle membrane that is rich in blood vessels. Darkly pigmented to block light from reflecting back into the retina.
