Proteins and Enzymes Flashcards
What are some of the functions of proteins
-provide structural materials
-energy sources
-hormones
-receptors
-antibodies
-enzymes (catalyze metabolic processes)
What process are peptide bonds formed though
Dehydration synthesis or translation
What process breaks peptide bonds
Hydrolysis
What are peptide bonds
Covalent bonds that hold amino acids together
What are active sites
The part of an enzyme that temporarily combines with portions of the substrate
What does amylase break down and where is it produced?
Breaks down starch and glycogen. Produced in the salivary glands
What does pepsin break down and where is it produced?
Breaks down protein digestion. Produced by the gastric glands
What does sucrase, lactase, and maltase break down and where is it produced
Breaks down disaccharides into monosaccharides. Produced in the small intestine
What are essential amino acids
Amino acids that the body cannot synthesize
What are complete vs. incomplete proteins
Complete proteins contain all of the essential amino acids
How can enzymes speed up chemical reactions
An enzyme might bind to a substrate in a way that changes the shape of it, making it easier for the substrate to react
