The experimental method Flashcards
Define the aim of an investigation.
A statement of what the researcher intends to investigate or find out in a study.
Define experiment.
A research method where causal relationships can be drawn because an IV has been deliberately manipulated to observe the causal effect on the DV.
Define extraneous variables.
Do not very systematically with the IV (don’t act as an alternative IV) but my impact the DV. ‘Nuisance variables’.
Define confounding variable.
A variable that is not the IV but systematically varies with the IV. It will impact the DV and will be impossible to control for.
Define hypothesis.
Precise and testable statement about the assumed relationship between variables. Variables must be mentioned and operationalised.
