What are varices?
A
Abnormally dlated blood vessels with a tortuous course - associated with liver disease

What is an angiodysplasia?
A
A small vascular malformation of the gut

What commonly causes a Mallory-Weiss tear in the oesophagus?
A
Excessive vomiting

What are diverticulae?
A
Blind tubes leading from a cavity or passage

How would variceal bleeding be treated? (3)
A
- Sclerosant - injectable irritant causing inflammation and fibrosis obliterating the lumen of the vessel
- Histoacryl glue - a glue to close wounds
- Banding - rubber bands placed around varices by an endoscope

How would arterial bleeding be treated? (3)
A
- Injectable therapy - adrenaline causes vasoconstriction
- Heater probe - burns vessels
- Clips - can block blood flow

Which conditions may be screened for using an endoscope?
A
UC, colonic polyps, Barrett’s oesophagus
