What is the endocrine system?
This controls growth and development and is made up of a number of glands called endocrine glands.
What is a gland?
This is a structure that secretes a specific chemical substance.
What are the two types of glands?
Endocrine gland and
Exocrine gland
Describe exocrine glands , some types and what they secrete
They transport their secretions by ducts to other parts of the body.
Example: 1. Salivary gland - in the mouth secrete saliva into the mouth
2. Tear gland- by the eye secrete fluid onto the eye’s surface
3. Pancreatic gland- pancreatic juice
Describe endocrine glands, some types and what they secrete
They secrete chemicals called hormones directly into the bloodstream from the gland to its target organ.
Example: 1. Pituitary gland- pituitary growth hormone
2. Thyroid gland- thyroxin
3. Adrenal gland- Adrenalin
4. Ovaries - progesterone, oestrogen
5. Testes- testosterone
6. Pancreas - insulin
