Holozoic Nutrition Flashcards
What is holozoic nutrition?
Holozoic nutrition is a type of heterotrophic nutrition where organisms, like mammals, ingest organic food and process it through ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and egestion.
What are the five stages of holozoic nutrition?
Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, and Egestion.
What is ingestion?
Ingestion is the act of taking in food, such as placing food into the mouth in humans.
What is digestion?
Digestion is the process of breaking down large, complex, insoluble food molecules into small, simple, soluble ones. It involves both physical breakdown by teeth and chemical breakdown by enzymes.
What is absorption in nutrition?
Absorption is the diffusion of soluble food molecules like glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, glycerol, vitamins, minerals, and water into the bloodstream.
What is assimilation in nutrition?
Assimilation is when absorbed food molecules are taken from the blood and used by body cells for respiration, growth, and development.
What is egestion?
Egestion is the removal of undigested parts of food from the body. It is also called defecation.
