Q

Explain how the fight or flight response happens

A

1- hypothalamus gets signals from the CNS and PNS about potential threats
2- if there is a threat the hypothalamus sends electric signals to the sympathetic nervous system
3- this activates the adrenal gland to release adrenaline
4- this causes the bodily actions of the fight or flight response

16
Q

What happens when the stress is no longer present

A

The hypothalamus activates the parasympathetic nervous system to decrease bodily activities
- this is called the rest and digest response

17
Q

2 limitations of the fight or flight response research

A
  • lacks population validity as most research was done on males
  • ignores individual differences for example some people are prone to freezing
18
Q

Explain the usefulness of the fight or flight response

A

+ excellent way to deal with danger we would have experienced as cave men
- lots of these instincts are less necessary now and maybe less severe
