Localisation Of Function Flashcards
Define localisation of function
The idea that certain functions have certain locations within the brain
What is the motor cortex responsible for
Voluntary movements by sending signals to muscles in the body
What does the somatosensory cortex do
Receives incoming sensory information from the skin to produce sensations
What does the visual cortex do
Receives and processes visual information
What does the auditory cortex do?
Analyses and processes acoustic information
What does Broca’s area do?
Responsible for language production
What does Wernickes area do?
Responsible for language comprehension
Where is the motor cortex found
Frontal lobe
Where is the somatosensory cortex found
Parietal Lobe
Where is the visual cortex found
Occipital lobe
Where is the auditory cortex found
Temporal lobe
Where is Broca’s area found
Left frontal lobe
Where is wernickes area found
Left Temporal Lobe
State two weaknesses of Localisation of Function
- equipotentiality, the idea that all areas of the brain are able to do all functions- supported by plasticity
- study showing women have much larger Broca’s and wernickes area then men, this shows beta bias within localisation
Who completed the study into the sizes of male and femal language centres
Herasty
