Divisions Of The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the role of the spinal chord in the nervous system
A
- made up of nerve axons that stretches from the bottom of the brain to the end of the back
- protected by bones called the spinal column
- Information travels to and from the brain along the spinal chord
2
Q
What is the nervous system
A
- network of the all the neurons in the body
- Sensory neurons, relay neurons, motor neurons
- transmits info from the body to the brain and then back to the body
3
Q
What are the two divisions of the nervous system
A
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
4
Q
Central nervous system
A
- brain and spinal chord
- encased by bones
5
Q
Peripheral nervous system
A
- all of the nerves in all other parts of the body
6
Q
Which divisions of the nervous system can each neuron be found in
A
- relay: Only central nervous system
- sensory: Both
- Motor: Both
7
Q
What are the two divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
A
- Somatic nervous system
- autonomic nervous system
8
Q
Describe the role of the somatic nervous system
A
- carries info from sensory receptors to the the central nervous system
- controls activity in our muscles
- usually conscious
9
Q
Describe the roll of the autonomic nervous system
A
- carries information to and from internal organs
- unconscious vital functions of the body
10
Q
What are the two components of the autonomic nervous system?
A
- sypathetic nervous system
- Parasympathetic nervous system
11
Q
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system?
A
- increases bodily activities
12
Q
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
A
- reduces bodily activities
