How does the structure of the poem contribute to the style?
Written in blank verse and unrhyming as well as enjambment, the poem feels like an adress from the speaker.
5 sentences, each a different Focus, guiding the reader through the poem.
Describe the discardment in lines 1-3.
The item of clothing is something that has no intrinsic value to the speaker. Maybe worn out, old, out of fashion.
Describe her reaction.
jubilant, sincere. reader feels empathy (use verb diction)
this is in sharp contrast with the value of the item to the we.
How does her reaction progress?
it becomes hyperbolic; intolerable to the speaker (either because malice or because it is simply a discardment)
this heightens discomfort in the reader.
Talk about the use of pronouns and discuss the third last line
- she has no power, she is dependent on we, she needs desires them – cause of hyperbole?
- effect of her being “the earth’s most rare simplicity”
How does the tone progress?
Matter of fact to embarrassed to deep reflection.
