The Digestive System Flashcards
What is the digestive system?
The digestive system in a mammal is an organ system where several organs work together to digest and absorb food.
How big is the digestive system?
Between 6 and 9m long.
What does the digestive system do?
The digestive system breaks down the food that we take in as our bodies are unable to absorb it.
Once it has been broken down to a soluble substance, it is absorbed into the blood stream.
Changing pH in the digestive system
The protease of the stomach work best in acid conditions. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid which maintains a low pH.
Where do enzymes work best?
Enzymes made in the pancreas work best in alkaline conditions.
Which organ produces acid?
The glands in the stomach lining produce stomach acid
Which organ produces bile?
The liver
Where are digested foods absorbed into the blood?
Small intestine
Why does ph affect enzyme activity?
Changes the shape of the active site meaning substrate will no longer fit.
