DNA and Inheritance Flashcards
DNA
DNA is a chemical found in the nucleus of cells. It is a polymer made up of two strands joined together. The structure of DNA is described as a double stranded, double helix molecule.
Chromosomes
Chromosomes are the long coiled molecules that the DNA is arranged into.
Each chromosome is composed of DNA and protein molecules
They hold the structure together.
Genes
A gene is a section of a chromosome that looks for a particular protein (e.g insulin).
Alleles
We receive two forms of each gene. These different forms are called Alleles.
Genome
The genome of an organism is the entire genetic material of that organism (i.e All of the chromosomes and a small amount of DNA found in the mitochondria)
Mitochondria
Mitochondria are a part of eukaryotic cells. The main job of mitochondria is to perform cellular respiration. This means it takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks it down, and turns it into energy.
