Homeostasis And Response Flashcards
Give two ways in which reflex action is different from an action controlled by hormones?
Reflex actions are much quicker as they are instant and reflex actions involves impulses and hormone involves chemicals
Explain why a man with a damaged spinal cord will not be able to feel a pin stuck in his toe?
The pain receptors connect to the effector via the spinal cord. Therefore, when the pain receptors detect the pin it cannot connect to the effector (muscle) as the connection between the two is severed.
What is a hormone?
A chemical substance that regulates processes in the body
Name an organ that produces a hormone
Pancreas
How are hormones transported to their target organs?
Via the Bloodstream
Describe how the hormones FSH, Oestrogen and LH are involved in the control of the menstrual cylce
FSH stimulates oestrogen and matures the egg.
LH triggers the release of the egg.
Oestrogen inhibits FSH
Which Hormone controls the concentration of glucose in the blood?
Insulin
Which organ produces Insulin?
Pancreas
