The Digestive System Flashcards
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts
What are the two types of digestion?
- Physical
- Chemical
What is physical digestion?
Where the food is broken down by teeth and the churning action of the muscles in the digestive system
What is Chemical digestion?
Where the food is broken down by enzymes
What is a substrate?
The substance on which the enzyme acts
What is a product?
The substance that is formed as a result of the reaction
What are the stages of digestion?
- Eating
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Getting rid of undigested waste
What is eating?
The taking in of food
What is absorption?
The digested food is taken into the blood stream and carried to the cells
What is in the digestive system?
- Mouth
- Oesophagus
- Stomach
- Small intestine
- Large intestine
What is the function of the mouth?
- Physical digestion by teeth
- Chemical digestion by enzymes
What is the function of the Oesophagus?
Carries food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the function of the stomach?
Food mixes with digestive enzymes and is churned
What is the function of the liver?
Produces bile
What is the function of the pancreas?
Produced digestive enzymes
