Heat Flashcards
Give two examples of heat energy being changed into another form of energy, or vice-versa.
- a volcano erupting, this is heat energy turning to light and sound energy
- kinetic energy turning to heat energy when you rub your hands together
What is the unit used to measure energy?
Joules (J)
What happens substances when they are affected by heat?
They expand.
What happens substances when they are cooled down?
They contract.
What is heat and what abilities does it have?
Heat is a form of energy. This means it has the ability to do work or move something.
Explain how expansion happens.
The particles get more energy from the heat and move away from each other.
Explain how contraction happens.
The particles lose heat and move closer together again.
What is radiation?
It is the rapid transfer of heat from a hot object without the use of a medium
What happens when you heat a substance?
It expands
What happens when you cool an object?
It contracts
What happens when water reaches below 4oC?
It expands
What is convection?
It is the transfer of heat through a liquid or gas when the particles of the gas or liquid move and carry heat with them
What is an insulator?
It is a substance that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it easily
What is latent heat?
It is the heat taken in or given out when a substance is changing state, without changing temperature
Name one good conductor.
Metal
