Carbon Dioxide Flashcards
1
Q
What is the chemical equation for making Carbon dioxide in the lab?
A
CaCo3 + 2HCI —> CaCl2 + H2O + Co2
2
Q
What is the word equation for making carbon dioxide in the lab?
A
Calcium Carbonate + Hydrochloric Acid —> Calcium Chloride + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Acid + Carbonate —> Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
3
Q
What are four physical properties of carbon dioxide?
A
- Colourless, Odourless, Tasteless Gas
- Slightly Soluble in water
- More Dense then Air
- Turns Limewater Milky
4
Q
What are the uses of carbon dioxide?
A
Used in:
- Fizzy Drinks: Dilute carbonic acid under pressure
- Fire Extinguishers: Does not support combustion & puts out fires
- Refrigeration: Under pressure, turns into a white solid (dry ice -78*C) which sublimes (changes from a solid to a gas). It cools food.
- Special Effects on Stage: Dry ice produces mist when put in water

Q
What are three chemical properties of Carbon dioxide?
A
- Does not Support Combustion
- Turns Limewater Milky (characteristic test)
- Dissolves in Water to form Carbonic Acid
