The Breathing System Flashcards
What are the parts in the breathing system?
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Rings of Cartilage
- Bronchus
- Lungs
- Intercostal muscles
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli
- Diaphragm
What is the function of the trachea?
Allows air to pass in and out of the lungs
What is the function of the Rings Of Cartilage?
To keep the trachea open
What is the function of the bronchus?
Connects the lungs to the trachea
What is the function of intercostal muscles?
To move the rib cage up and down during breathing
What is the function of the bronchioles?
Thin tubes which carry air within the lungs
What is the function of the alveoli?
This is where oxygen and Carbon Dioxide exchange
What is the function of the diaphragm?
It’s a sheet of muscle that moves up and down during breathing causing air to move in and out of the lungs
Why are the walls very thin in the alveoli?
To allows gases to diffuse through them easily
What are two dangers of smoking (explain)?
- Tar In cigarettes irritates and damages the lining of the bronchioles. This causes the lining to produce too much mucous which can’t be cleared easily.
- nicotine damages blood vessels and the heart
What are the functions of the breathing system?
- To take in oxygen for respiration
- To remove carbon dioxide
- To remove water vapour
Define respiration?
It’s the release of energy from food.
What is aerobic respiration?
Oxygen breaks down food. The release of energy is controlled by enzymes
