What does the mouth do?
Starting point of food entering the digestive system
Order of parts:
Mouth, teeth, tongue, oesophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, duodenum, ileum, large intestine and anus
What do the teeth do?
Break up food particles mechanically in the mouth
What does the tongue do?
Mixed food with saliva
What does the oesophagus do?
Transport of food to stomach
What does the stomach do?
Store and digest the food
What does the liver do?
Site of bile salt storage
What does the gall bladder do?
Site of bile salt production
What does the pancreas do?
Secretes digestive juices and enzymes
What does the duodenum do?
Digests the food further and absorbs nutrients
What does the ileum do?
Final digestion of food and the main absorption of the nutrients
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water, salts and vitamins
What does the anus do?
Defecation
Definition of peristalsis?
The process of food being moved down the oesophagus
Definition of assimilation?
The process of using absorbed nutrients in cells and tissues
