Enzymes Flashcards
What does amylase do and what part of the body is it present in?
Amylase breaks down starch into smaller sugars and is present in the breaking down of food in the mouth and duodenum’s break down of starch.
In the mouth, which group of enzymes are present?
Carbohydrase
What is maltose and where does it come from?
Maltose is a sugar molecule and is what starch is when it’s broken down.
What group of enzymes is in the stomach?
Protease
What breaks protein down into amino acids?
Pepsin
What does maltose eventually become?
Glucose
What is maltose broken down with?
Maltase
What breaks down protein in the duodenum (small intestine)?
Tripsin
What group of enzymes breaks down lipids?
Lipase
What do lipids break down into?
Glycerol and fatty acids
What are enzymes?
Special proteins that speed up chemical reactions e.g. the breakdown of food molecules
