What was the purpose of the Magna Carta?
Created June 1215. Showed that the King was not above the law, and had to follow the laws. Citizens were given certain rights.
What was the Declaration of Independence?
Was the United States break up letter from Britain. Written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by the thirteen colonies.
What are the four parts of the Declaration of Independence and their purpose?
Preamble (why we wanted separation), Natural rights (stated that people were born with natural rights), Grievances (our complaints), Resolution of Independence (claimed us free).
What were the Articles of Confederation?
Articles of Confederation established a league of friendship between the states. Was unicameral, with only a single legislative branch as government.
What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?
The government couldn’t tax, regulate trade, lack of power to make states obey the Articles.
What is an anti-federalist?
They wanted a small government and wanted to have more rights. Feared having a king again.
What is a federalist?
They wanted a strong government, believed it was necessary if states were to bond together.
What were the six purposes for writing the constitution?

What were the seven articles of the constitution?

What is popular sovereignty?
All power is given to the people. Representatives are chosen by the people.
What is limited government?
The government only has the power to do what the people allow them to do.
What is separation of powers?
Separates the power of the different branches.
